Series: Penn State Logic Seminar Date: Tuesday, December 10, 2002 Time: 2:30 - 3:45 PM Place: 312 Boucke Building Speaker: Elizabeth T. Brown, Mathematics, Dartmouth Title: Tree Forcing At Uncountable Cardinals Abstract: The method of forcing closed the first chapter of set theoretic investigation by demonstrating the independence of the continuum hypothesis; at the same time, it opened the rich new field of general independence results generally. Since then, it has been applied to a wide variety of problems across the foundations of mathematics, and analysis. In this talk, we will discuss a recently systematized type of forcing, tree forcings at unocuntable cardinals. We will motivate the topic by reviewing iterated tree forcings over $\omega$ Throughout, the emphasis will be on context, intuition, and motivation. The talk will be accessible to graduate students.
